Yarn Substitution Basics

Yarn Substitution for No - Float Tunisian Crochet Projects
If you’re using No-Float Tunisian crochet patterns, you’ll see that I provide specific yarn recommendations, including the exact yarn name and colour used. If you can’t find the exact yarn, don’t worry! Here’s how you can substitute it to achieve results as close as possible to the original project.
Why Yarn Substitution Matters
Substituting yarn allows you to get the similar look and feel as the original, even if the recommended yarn isn’t available. By matching key yarn characteristics, you can still complete your project successfully.
What You Need To Know About Yarn Labels
To choose the right substitute yarn, follow these steps:
Yarn Weight: Check the yarn weight, such as DK (double knit), 4 Ply or a combination of both. Pick yarns that match the weight used in the pattern. I am in the U.K. and use U.K. specific yarns, so the weights may be called something different in your area. I do however, research and add the equivalent US and Aus yarn weights in my patterns as seen in this screenshot image below.
Yarn Label Gauge
Note: The yarn label gauge is used in the No-Float Method only to help you make yarn substitutions.
This is not the same as Project Gauge (click here for more info).
When you’re choosing a substitute yarn, the most important detail to check is the gauge shown on the yarn label.
The design of this label may vary between brands, but it will always display the number of stitches and rows worked over a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inch) square.
Your substitute yarn should closely match the stitch and row count of the pattern’s recommended yarn.
Doing so ensures your project maintains the correct size, shape, and fit.
✅ Match this — and you’re good to go!
Yardage: Note the yardage, which indicates the length of yarn in the ball or skein. This helps you determine how much yarn you’ll need for your project.
Recommended Hook Size: Ignore the hook size on the yarn label, instead use the size specified in your pattern. Tunisian crochet creates a unique fabric, so you will be using a hook that may be larger or small larger than what the yarn label suggests.
Finding the Perfect Substitute
For finding yarn substitutes, I recommend using YarnSub (https://yarnsub.com/). Just type in the yarn name from your pattern, and you’ll get a list of similar yarns that should work well as alternatives. YarnSub provides details like yarn weight, fibre content, and gauge, so you can choose a yarn that closely matches the original pattern recommendation.
I hope these tips make your yarn selection process easier and more enjoyable. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Happy crocheting!
